Blog: An Agile approach to business transformation.

Ian Blair

Businesses now operate in a fast-paced world of continual evolving technology. More and more services and products are now available to enable new operating models, business processes and business capabilities. Skilfully combining these products and services is hugely important for a successful digital transformation that enhances productivity and drives efficiency. Information technology has moved from a supporting function to a central function and is crucial to how a business and its individuals work. Through digital transformation and the adoption of new technology, businesses are being fundamentally changed and in many cases radically improved.

In our experience working with businesses who have been through digital transformations one thing is ever-present. Moving from a traditional IT delivery model to the more modern cloud models is not just about a change of technology, it’s also an organisational change.

To get the best from any digital transformation it’s important to discuss the new technologies available, with the people who have lived and breathed all aspects of them. The services, tools, process and techniques now available are so rich and have many ways they can be used. In our experience, the businesses who have a clear view on what they are trying to achieve and gain from the changes have delivered the most effective transformations. For example, the benefits that companies can gain from the cloud are great and should be tailored and individual. However, at the start of a transformation it is not always easy to clearly articulate where you want to go or how you are going to get there.  To help business understand their needs, bring out ideas and complete the vision of where they want to go, we believe these discussions should adopt an ‘Agile’ approach.

Agile has traditionally been used for assessing the direction of a project throughout the development lifecycle. All aspects of development are continuously revisited and this continuous monitoring re-evaluates the direction of a project. So, if something is not working there’s always time to take it in another direction. Agile development also goes hand in hand with cloud compute and the modern IT delivery model. Businesses that have leveraged Agile and Cloud have been delivering higher quality work and responding more quickly to their market through greater business agility, increasing their competitive advantage.

We believe it’s important that technology providers use the ‘Agile sale’ to increase adoption of newer technology and services, such as cloud, and increase the efficiencies it can bring a business. Leading organisations are benefiting from speaking to providers who have the market intelligence and experience of implementation, allowing them to use the ‘inspect and adapt’ approach. A knowledgeable and experienced organisation using this approach can reduce the risk in digital transformation, reduce costs and time to market. The ’Agile sale’ can help buyers and suppliers align to get the most value from cloud technology. Businesses will be able to recognise value earlier in a transformation and ultimately increase the success of their projects.

The ‘Agile-sale’ approach means businesses can begin their transformation whilst continuing to analyse and gather requirements from the real world. This ultimately leads to the right choice and solution for the business helping them remain as competitive and Agile in the marketplace as possible.
